How to Purchase A Blogger Domain Name


Below are easy-to-follow instructions on how to purchase a domain name from Blogger. If you want printable instructions, please download the text file below. Please note that it does not include any screenshots, just text.

  1. You must first have your Blogger account set up AND a blog set up before purchasing your domain name. Learn How to open a Blogger account

  2. Log into your Blogger account. You will now be in your Dashboard.

  3. From your Dashboard, click on Settings.

  5. Within Settings, click on Publishing.

  7. Choose a Domain Name: Type in the domain name you would like and if you want .com, .net, etc. Click on Check Availability.

  9. If it is not available, you'll be prompted to pick out another name, Blogger will list similar suggestions or you can type in another name below the suggestions. Once you have found the domain name you want (don't settle otherwise you'll have to live with the one you purchase for at least a year), you will get a page that says: sitename.com is available. Click on the "Continue to Registration" button at the bottom of that page.

  11. Sign Up: Fill in your personal information to Register your domain name. All fields are required. Make sure you read GoDaddy.com's TOS. Make sure uncheck if you do not want GoDaddy.com to automatically renew your registration each year. You can Print the Terms of Service. When you are all done with this form, click on the "I accept, Proceed to Google Checkout" button.

  13. Google Checkout: Fill in your credit card information completely. Click on the "Agree and Continue" button.

  15. You are now prompted to sign in to your Google Gmail account.

  17. Back to Google Checkout. Make any changes to the options boxes. If this page is correct, click on the "Place your order now -- $10.00" button.

  19. You will now get a page that says: Thanks, you're done! You can now click on the "Get up-to-date order progress" link to check the status of your domain name. Wait about 10 minutes before clicking on this link, mine did not take very long.

  21. You will receive a Order Receipt email from Google, be sure to print a copy for your records.


  22. After about 10 mintues, click on the status link and you should now get a message that your order is complete. If not, wait for another 10 minutes and refresh the page. This is the message you should see:

  24. On this same page, up in the yellow section, you will see a link to "Click here to retrieve your purchase". Click on this link.

  26. You will now be directed back to your blog setting page with a big message "Thanks, your domain purchase is complete". On that same page under Advanced Settings, make sure your new domain name is listed in the first box and the box is checked for the Redirect. Enter the word verification and click on the "Save Settings" box.

  28. You will now get a page that says "You're publishing on a custom domain" and "Settings were saved successfully".

  30. At the top of the same page, click on View Blog next to the top tabs.

  32. You will now get a "Your blog is in transition" message at the top of the next page. It might take 1 - 3 days before your new domain is ready for the public, in the meantime, all your visitors can still reach you at your old blogspot.com address.

  34. You will have recieved an email from Google Apps regarding your Domain Registration Confirmation. This email will specify who your domain is registered with and when it expires. You will need to renew it if you did not select automatic renewal BEFORE it expires a year from now. This email also has a link to click to start learning and using Google Apps.
